Hi, everybody! My name is Nick from D.W. Alexander bar and lounge in Toronto and today I am going to share with you how to make a Cosmopolitan cocktail. I have to admit it is one the most famous cocktail all over the world. Let’s get to know a little bit about the drink before we get into how to easily make one for yourself.

The classic Cosmopolitan is a very simple but classy drink. It might be had to believe but the first reference to the Cosmopolitan was published in 1934 in the Pioneers of Mixing at Elite Bars. In the 1970’s the drink really took off and the vodka-cranberry drink took the world by storm.

Today, most bartenders all over the world know how to make this light, fruity Martini, making it the perfect choice especially during the summer. There are several variations on the Cosmopolitan depending on the amount of cranberry juice, Cointreau, and vodka. Some like it with more juice, others with more vodka. According to the “Bartenders Black Book” the amount of Vodka and is very high compared to the levels of cranberry juice. But remember it all depends on personal preference you can vary the amount of any of the ingredients as you wish, personally this is how I like it: slightly blush pink rather than a deep red. The Cosmopolitan also influenced similar drinks such as the Red Lotus.

So let’s get right into it.

1 1/2 ounces vodka (plain or citrus flavor)

1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice

1 ounce Cointreau orange or triple sec liqueur

1/4 or 1/2 ounce cranberry juice

2 Ice cubes

Orange or lime peel for garnish

Step 1. The first step is to assemble the ingredients listed above

Step 2. Get yourself a cocktail shaker and mix in the vodka, lime juice, orange liqueur, and cranberry juice. Make sure to add the ingredients in the order they are listed. If you do not have a cocktail shaker you can use a jar, but I suggest you get a cocktail shaker before your next cocktail party.

Step 3. Next add some ice to the shaker and close the lid. Ice is particularly perfect for a sunny cocktail party during the summer

Step 4. Shake the mix until the drink is well chilled. Shake until you see beads of water outside of the cocktail shaker as it starts to fog up.

Step 5. Garnish the drink with a lime wedge or Orange peel to the rim

Serving Suggestion:

If you prefer a sweet cosmopolitan, try using 2 parts of the flavored vodka and some more cranberries.
